Join NIJC and the University of Wisconsin Law School for a virtual training that discusses how attorneys can enable immigrant children to secure protection in the form of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) by representing their parents or guardians in uncontested custody and guardianship cases in Wisconsin state court.

For eligible immigrant children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected by one or both parents, SIJS is protection from deportation. SIJS cases involve two parts: (1) a state court custody or guardianship case that places the child in the legal care of a parent or guardian, followed by (2) an immigration application for SIJS. This training addresses the first part of this process.

Experts Hillary Richardson from the National Immigrant Justice Center and Professor Jennifer Binkley from the University of Wisconsin Law School will provide an overview of SIJS law in Wisconsin, how to prepare and present a case, in addition to practical tips to working with clients remotely. Sara Scullen, Of Counsel at Quarles & Brady and an active pro bono attorney, will share how pro bono attorneys have life-changing impact for clients and in developing state-based child protection laws.

2.0 CLE credits are available.
