Forty years ago, Congress created an asylum system to ensure that the U.S. protects those seeking refuge from persecution and comes into conformity with international law. Asylum law did not stay uniform for long, however, with the past four years bruising and abusing it beyond recognition. As we approach 2021, NIJC reviews the state of asylum today and how NIJC and pro bono attorneys continue to advocate for and defend the timeless right to seek asylum.
