Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, the Senate parliamentarian issued a devastating advisory opinion, choosing to exclude immigration reform provisions in the Build Back Better Act and once again delaying life-saving measures to millions of undocumented people in communities across the country. Although this decision is the latest in a series of broken promises by the U.S. Congress and the White House, the advocates and immigrant leaders who have fought for permanent protections for decades are not giving up. The National Immigration Justice Center (NIJC) joins advocates across the country to hold members of Congress accountable, asking them to bypass the parliamentarian and deliver permanent protection and citizenship for immigrants and their families and communities.
National Immigrant Justice Center’s Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy issued the following statement in response:
“This administration and this Congress continue to break their promises to immigrant communities. The Senate parliamentarian is not an elected official. We remain focused on holding members of Congress accountable to their promises. We stand with immigrant communities leading the fight and demanding the safety and stability we all want for ourselves and our loved ones. NIJC will continue to center human rights and dignity in the fight for the safety of immigrant communities and a pathway for citizenship.”
