Azadeh Erfani, senior policy analyst at NIJC, responded to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today to allow Texas Senate Bill 4 (S.B. 4) to go into effect while the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals considers its constitutionality:
“With this decision, the U.S. Supreme Court opens the doors for one of the most extremist and anti-immigrant policies in U.S. history to go into effect at the state level. SB4 codifies racial profiling and criminalizes people seeking safety in the United States. Granting local and state law enforcement permission to arrest, detain, and deport people who are suspected to have entered the country without authorization is extremely dangerous for not only immigrant communities, but all people of color who live in or travel to Texas."
