The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) celebrates the U.S. Senate’s passage early this morning of a budget resolution that includes a path to citizenship for immigrant youth, people with Temporary Protected Status, farmworkers, and other essential workers. This marks a major milestone and brings millions of people in our communities one step closer to legalization.

NIJC is disappointed, however, to see the continued attacks on immigrants through the anti-immigrant amendments passed with the resolution that play into racist falsehoods conflating immigration with public health and public safety.

Congress now has an historic opportunity to begin to transform the U.S. immigration system into one that is grounded in racial equity and compassion, one that respects the dignity and human rights of all immigrants. NIJC looks to members of Congress to pass this bill—without amendments that demonize and harm immigrant communities—and ensure that no one is left behind.
