NIJC has a new Chicago address at 111 W. Jackson Blvd, Suite 800, Chicago, IL 60604 and a new email domain at @immigrantjustice.org.

The Biden administration recently proposed a new rule that will drastically limit access to asylum for people arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, and yet, is only allowing the public a mere 30 days to provide comments.

In response, 172 national, state, and local organizations wrote to the Biden administration urging it to allow at least 60 days for public comment on the rule.

The proposed asylum ban has vast implications on all stages of asylum processing, imposing new and complex requirements on asylum seekers before they reach the border, during their initial fear screening, as well as during immigration court review.

In the letter, the groups assert: "The human cost [of this rule] is beyond measure and demands the most careful research, analysis, and public consultation. It is highly inappropriate to afford the public a mere 30 days to comment on a proposal that violates domestic laws and international obligations on its face."

Read the full letter from 172 organizations calling for an extension to the public comment period.
