Chicago Immigration Court Updates:

  • All hearings for detained immigrants are still scheduled. 
     
  •  All non-detained immigration court hearings are cancelled through April 10, 2020.  
    There is no need to go to the immigration court if you are not detained and you have a hearing scheduled before April 10, 2020.
    • Eventually, the court will send rescheduled hearing notices for these cancelled hearings, but it will take time to send these notices. To check for a new hearing date, we encourage people to call the EOIR Automated Information Line at 1-800-898-7180 on a weekly basis beginning April 10, 2020. 
       
  • At present, the court remains open to receive filings, including asylum applications. If you want to file an application in person, please call the court first at 312-697-5800 to make sure the court is open. 

 

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Updates:

  • USCIS has suspended all in-person services until at least April 1, 2020, including field office interviews, asylum office interviews, and biometrics appointments.
    • Individuals scheduled for interviews before April 1, 2020 do not need to attend their interviews and will received a rescheduled date
       
  • Filings can still be submitted to USCIS via mail, but USCIS may not be able to adjudicate all applications due to the suspension of in-person services
    • Individuals who have filing deadlines, including to file for asylum or to file for a U visa, should still file their applications by the deadline

Changes to operations at NIJC’s Chicago office:

  • All in-person legal consultations are suspended until further notice.
     
  • All in-person NIJC legal clinics and pro bono trainings are cancelled through April 1.
     
  • NIJC’s Detention and LGBTQ hotline numbers are both operational at this time. Callers are encouraged to leave detailed voice messages and NIJC staff is responding to calls as quickly as possible.

NIJC continues to monitor the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Illinois Department of Public Health, and will announce further changes as necessary. Staff who are able to fulfill their duties remotely are working from home, and all are being encouraged to follow the CDC’s health and wellness guidelines.
