Congress Must Stop ICE’s Deadly Violence Against Our Communities

Statement by National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy

“We are devastated by the violence Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have brought to the Minneapolis area this week, in particular the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three who was reportedly acting as a legal observer. We offer our condolences to Ms. Good’s family and solidarity to colleagues in Minnesota who are demanding justice and peace for their communities.

“Chicagoans know from first-hand experience that when ICE and other federal agents arrive in our cities to target immigrants, they bring danger for everyone. Congress must stop spending our tax dollars on ICE, Customs and Border Protection, and other militarized federal officers and contractors that are harming our loved ones and neighbors.

“NIJC urges Congress to use the proposed 2026 DHS appropriations bill to rein in the Trump administration’s reckless assaults on our communities. Yesterday we joined partners in issuing a statement demanding that members of Congress oppose any additional funds for ICE in the upcoming budget negotiations.”
