In Hanaj v. Gonzales, a forensic laboratory had concluded that certain identity documents supporting Mr. Hanaj's asylum case were fraudulent. Attorneys from the National Immigrant Justice Center who represented Mr. Hanaj during his proceedings before immigration court produced experts to contradict the lab's conclusions and to support the asylum claim. However, the immigration judge discounted the entire case, including evidence of past torture, on the basis of an allegedly fraudulent birth certificate.  The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals found that this denial "lacked a reasoned basis," 446 F.3d 694 (7th Cir. 2006).
