NIJC presents this virtual training that prepares pro bono attorneys in Indiana to enable immigrant children to secure protection in the form of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ) by representing their parents or guardians in uncontested custody and guardianship cases in state court. For eligible immigrant children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected by one or both parents, SIJS is protection from deportation. SIJS cases involve two parts: (1) a state court custody or guardianship case that places the child in the legal care of a parent or guardian, followed by (2) an immigration application for SIJS. This training addresses the first part of this process. Experts at the National Immigrant Justice Center will provide an overview of SIJS law in Indiana, how to prepare and present a case, in addition to practical tips to working with clients remotely.
