NIJC has a new Chicago address at 111 W. Jackson Blvd, Suite 800, Chicago, IL 60604 and a new email domain at @immigrantjustice.org.

A coalition of more than 250 civil and human rights groups and labor and faith-based organizations today condemned the divisive anti-immigrant agenda of the newly elected majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and called for legislators to reject the Border Safety and Security Act, expected to go to a floor vote soon, which would effectively close the border to asylum seekers.

“The ‘Border Safety and Security Act’ would require a wholly unserious and harmful metric to be met before any asylum claim could be entertained, inevitably ending access to asylum at all U.S. borders, even for children,” the groups explain in a letter sent to House representatives this morning. “Specifically, the bill would seal off all borders and ports of entry to asylum seekers if Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents cannot detain or return to Mexico all arriving asylum seekers and migrants. This condition is operationally impossible and a recipe for a human rights catastrophe.”

The groups caution that the bill, along with other proposals to criminalize and punish immigrants which are detailed in House Republicans’ legislative agenda, represents an effort by the U.S. government to evade international asylum obligations, and impacts global perception of the United States as a world leader and as a nation that protects people seeking refuge. The bill would impose the greatest costs on Black, Brown and Indigenous asylum seekers, as is already the case at the border where Black migrants and asylum seekers endure disparate rates of abuse, detention, and violence. The hateful policies described in the agenda also are out of step with popular opinion polls which show U.S. voters overwhelmingly support protecting access to the asylum process.

“We urge Members of Congress to reject the politics of fear and hate and vote no on the “Border Safety and Security Act” and all subsequent anti-immigrant legislative vehicles,” the letter concludes.
