On June 11, 2018, the Attorney General issued a malicious decision in Matter of A-B-, which will make it much more difficult for many men, women, and children to obtain asylum protection. Importantly, it does not erase the many positive, precedential decisions at the Courts of Appeals, especially in the Seventh Circuit, that grant asylum to individuals fleeing harm by non-state actors, but it makes developing a strong record and access to representation more important than ever.
On Thursday, July 12, 2018, from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., NIJC will conduct a training regarding Matter of A-B- and best practices for presenting an asylum claim in light of this decision.
If you are representing an NIJC client seeking asylum based on harm by a non-state actor, we encourage you to register for this training. Please note that this training will focus specifically on practice tips to respond to Matter of A-B- and is not a substitute for NIJC’s general asylum training. IL CLE credit will be available for in-person attendees. Due to space limits, in-person attendance may be limited to attorneys currently representing NIJC asylum clients. Please contact Anna Sears at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or to RSVP.
Attorneys who are unable to attend in-person can participate via webinar. Please click here to register for the webinar version of the training.
If you do not currently have an NIJC asylum case, but are interested in getting involved, we encourage you to learn more about becoming an NIJC pro bono attorney and consider registering for our next asylum training on Friday, July 13th.
