NIJC Statement for the Record: House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Hearing with Sanctuary State Governors
The National Immigrant Justice Center submitted the following statement for the June 12, 2025, House Oversight hearing targeting Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois’ TRUST Act, signed into law in 2017 under then-Republican Governor Rauner. The law preserved Illinois resources to focus on residents’ needs and priorities, while keeping domestic violence survivors safer.
NIJC’s statement raises concerns regarding the context of the House Committee hearing; clarifies how the TRUST Act is lawful; highlights federal courts’ longstanding constitutional concerns with federal overreach associated with immigration enforcement practices and other concerns that should merit this Committee’s oversight; and emphasizes how Illinois’ welcoming policies prioritize the safety and economic well-being of all its residents.
